Biographical Note

 

Dr. Herbert Frederick Storm was born in Vienna, Austria, and received his degree in Electrical Engineering in 1932 and a Doctorate in Engineering Sciences in 1933 from the Technische Hochschule (Institute of Technology) of Vienna.

 

He joined the Industry Control Department of the General Electric Company in 1946, doing advanced development work in industrial electronics. Transferring to the Advanced Technology Laboratories (which later became part of the Research & Development Center), his efforts were concentrated on static controls of the magnetic type, such as magnetic amplifiers. Subsequently, the work area was broadened to include semiconductor devices and circuits, both for power and information handling.

 

Dr. Storm also served IEEE in many capacities, including first Chairman of the

IEEE Magnetics Group, and first Chairman of the International Magnetics (INTERMAG) Conference.

 

Dr. Storm died on November 18, 1994, at the age of 85.

 

 

Scope and Content Note:

 

The Storm Papers consist of materials created or collected by Frederick Storm himself.  The materials that Storm created were placed in 3-ring binders, and they make up the “Notebooks” series.  The rest of the collection is made up of publications, some of which were authored by Storm himself, others that he collected.

 

Most of the material concerns Storm’s work with solid-state electronics.  The collection contains no biographical or personal material, with the exception of what little might be gleaned from his professional correspondence found in the “Notebooks” series.

 

 

Series #1: Notebooks, 1947-1948, 1962, 1970-1981, undated.  3 linear ft.

Organized Alphabetically.

 

Most of the manuscript materials in the Storm Papers were collected and placed in 3-ring binders, most likely by Storm himself.  Some of these notebooks were given titles, others were assigned a letter, and some were given nothing. In the case of those without any designation, they have been described by the subject to which they refer. 

 

Series #2: Reports, 1962-1972, 1979-1980, 1985, undated. 2 linear ft.

Organized Alphabetically.

 

This series consists of internal GE reports, the bulk of which were created by Herbert Storm.  All pertain to some aspect of solid state devices.  Most of the reports fall into two categories: the Solid State Pooled Project (SSPP) series and the Technical Information Series (TIS).  Each publication in these series were assigned a number, and they have been sorted by these numbers.  As these numbers were assigned in order of publication, this means they are also in chronological order.

 

Series #3: Proceedings, 1965-1979.  2 linear ft.

Organized Chronologically

 

These materials are the official publications of various technical workshops and conferences collected by Herbert Storm.  Most of the events were sponsored and run  by the IEEE.  The majority of the publications are perfect bound, and so have not been stored in folders.

 

Series #4: Publications, 1925, 1935, 1955, 1962-1980, undated.  .66 linear ft.

 

A mixed collection of articles and newsletters relating to solid state electronics.  This series contains a run of the “Application Notes” newsletter, which Herbert Storm edited.


Series #5: Slides, undated.
1.15 linear ft.

 

This series consists of slides for several slide shows dealing with solid state electronics.  However, the shows have been jumbled at some point, and the slides are not in any clear order.
