Biographical Note

Major A. Johnson worked in the GE Missile and Space Division and participated on military electronics projects and missile development.  Military electronics work at GE was conducted primarily at GE’s Electronics Park in Syracuse and Missile and Space Division facility in Valley Forge, PA.

Scope and Content

Materials compiled by Major Johnson during his career and in research for Johnson's book "Progress in defense and space: A history of the Aerospace Group of the General Electric Company.” Materials include reports, advertising, newsletters, administrative files from GE, along with notes created by Johnson during his research for his book.

Series #1: Research Materials, 1930-1931, 1939-1987, 1990-1992, undated. 2.6 Linear Ft.

Organized Alphabetically

This series contains binders of materials created and collected by Johnson, during his research on Progress in Defense and Space and other works.  In essence these are scrapbooks containing notes, correspondence, clippings, publications, photographs and chapter drafts.  These materials were collected and placed in binders without apparent order, and each binder was labeled.  The failing binders have been removed and the contents placed in folders, with the contents of some large binders spanning several folders.

Series #2: Publications, 1946, 1951, 1959, 1960-1962, 1965-1973, 1978-1990, undated. 1.3 Linear Ft.

Organized Alphabetically

This collection contains reports and newsletters that were collected by Major Johnson.  All materials relate to the fields of military aviation technology or space technology.

Series #3: Photographs, 191801938, 1940, undated. .6 Linear Ft.

Organized Alphabetically

The collection consists a number of photographs that were housed in large envelopes and labeled by subject.  The photographs themselves are frequently labeled on the back with technical data.  Most photographs show equipment, usually military equipment such as planes, rockets or radar installations.  A few also show engineers working with the equipment.  The folder “GE Engineers” contains copies of classic photographs of famous GE notables, such as Charles Steinmetz and Thomas Edison.
