Biographical Note

Robert Ferguson Edgar received his MS in electrical engineering in 1929 from the University of Minnesota.  That year he began his career at GE in Schenectady as a test engineer.  In 1930 he became a full engineer working in the Magnetic Section of the General Engineering and Consulting Laboratory.  He continued to work in the field of magnetic and electromagnetic circuits throughout his career.

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains materials created or collected by Robert Edgar during his career in the laboratories at GE.  These materials consist of internal reports, articles, correspondence, memos, photographs and notes.  The majority of this collection is made up of reports and articles dealing with electronics and magnetic technology that Edgar collected.  Much of this is stored in a series of subject files.  There is very little that is personal to Edgar, and nothing that relates to Edgar’s private life.

Series #1: Working Papers, 1932, 1938-1940, 1945, 1948-1970, undated

Organized Alphabetically

This series contains the materials created by Robert Edgar during his time at GE.  This includes the drafts of some of his reports, his letterbook and a scrap book.

Series #2: Articles, 1904, 1927, 1929, 1932, 1936, 1947-1970, undated

Organized Alphabetically

A mixture of articles and clippings collected by Robert Edgar.  Many are from scholarly journals, and almost all deal with electronics.

Series #3: Subject Files, 1929-1930, 1932, 1934, 1936-1974, 1977-1980, undated

Organized Alphabetically

This series is a mixture of materials organized roughly by topic, most likely by Edgar himself.  Materials include reports, memos, correspondence and publications.

Series #4: Reports, 1919, 1930, 1932, 1940, 1944-1948, 1951, 1954-1969, 1978

Organized Alphabetically

This series contains internal reports, almost all published by GE, collected by Edgar during his time there.  Most deal with magnetic technology and electronics.
